The Charles Kovess Show

Ep #213: Should you go up the homeschooling road?

Season 1 Episode 213

In this week’s episode, I focus on a single but powerful idea: the question of education. I reflect on what a "good" education means, noting that despite its universal importance, there’s no consensus on what a “good” education actually is.

Some view success as a direct result of formal schooling, but I challenge this by sharing examples of highly successful and competent individuals who had shitty schooling experiences.

It is obvious, I say, that success is not solely defined by education, but by one’s ability to progressively realise a worthy ideal.

I highlight the problems in modern schooling, especially the absence of spiritual education, which I see as a deliberate strategy that hinders children’s personal development. Without spirituality, I believe, children are deprived of a critical component of their human capacity. This leads me to advocate for homeschooling as a viable alternative. I outline its benefits: efficiency, tailored learning, and the nurturing of a love for lifelong learning.

Ultimately, I encourage parents to critically assess their values and integrity to then guide the choice of educational environments for their children. After all, education is more than just academic achievement; it shapes a child’s worldview and future.

Consider whether homeschooling might be a better option if formal schooling no longer aligns with your family’s values. I recommend my first book, Passionate People Produce, and its final two chapters on education, for more in-depth consideration.
